Try and picture this situation! The world as we know has been thrown into a war being Heaven and hell, of course right in the middle is earth the third kingdom. The rules are clear; until humanity is ready to fight in this on going battle between demons and angels then the seventh seal will not be broken. I guess you can say that someone did not get the memo. The creator of “BattleChasers” Joe Madureira resurrects an ancient of apocalyptic proportions. Keep reading to get the full review.
The story is about how Heaven and Hell are always in battle, so a neutral group is called “The Charred Council” which forms the four horsemen which take on both factions until a truce is between Heaven and Hell. It took an eon until a truce was formed and then a third kingdom was formed of humans. A prophecy by the Council saw that man would play a major role in the next battle between the three kingdoms. Once Humanity was ready to battle in the final war the seven seals would be broken and the final decision would be made, or so they thought. As you enter the first cut-scene angels and demons are falling from the sky fighting on Earth, killing humans in their path, War arrives to conduct order but is confused to see he is the only one that answered the call. He noticed this problem when confronting the general of heavens army Abaddon. Tragedy goes from bad to worse, when Straga rises from the ground and kills Abaddon in front of his second in command Uriel and War. Since Straga is one of the “Destroyers” chosen it raises an eyebrow towards War’s presence. In your weakened state, you lose against Straga and now face damnation by the hands of the Council and this is where you begin your journey!
Now a century has gone by, you return to a damaged world taken over by demons. Now that you know what’s going on now, we can enter the combat training. During the story I just told you . It will play like your tutorial where you learn some of War’s powers that he will obtain later in the game. As you start a new you will be stripped of all of your abilities, leaving you with just enough to survive. The combat is easy to master, its fairly easy with dodge, melee, magic attacks and grabs. Since this is an M-rated title you will see some brutal attacks and dismemberment, ripping wings off and splitting demons in half. The more you use your sword, the more it’ll upgrade. Here’s a tip, when fighting the zombies use your grabs to obtain health instead of just killing them.
Certain things that Darksiders does is collecting souls and finding soul chest in different colors blue, yellow, and green. The “Watcher” he is your tool and essentially your parole officer, pretty much the only thing that is given the right to kill War. The “Watcher” is voiced by Mark Hamil which some of you have known did voice work for many characters. If you respect the “Watcher” you live, simple as that. You also have your demonic transportation in the game, War’s horse, Ruin. Ruin is War’s trusted steed and one of the most badass characters in the game.
I have to admit this is a definite clone of “God of War”, however its not that bad. It will get very repetitive quickly since War has limited moves and only can change between two different weapons. In terms of weapons, you get a clave and gauntlet. There are other parts of the game that make you feel like this is “Panzer Dragon” with the air combat or “Zelda” with the map quest. The back tracking will happen often in the game, so I suggest take what you can on something like health chests because you will always get more when you come a second time around.
Final verdict, at first I was going to say rent but as I kept playing and playing a lot it became more and more fun. I would definitely go out and buy this game; it has a lot of fun and easy going because it has a familiar feel of of many action games all bundled up into one. The storyline is done well and backed up with great visuals from the big boss battles to the combat. It is finally Friday and that means gaming and hopefully nothing but gaming. Thanks for checking out the review Darksiders is out now for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, as always stay frosty gamers!
