Hello fellow readers and welcome to a new segment called “The Gamers Literature Review” where I will review some novels written about games that we love. So far there have been many books based on video games but not enough at the time to be reviewed, but so far they have been popping up like daises. So that is a brief explanation for those of you curious and hope you find the segment appealing.
Who here is a Halo fan, hands? All right well some might recognize the franchise as being one of the best selling video game from Bungie. They have been expanding into board games, action figures, and newly developed anime and of course novels. Adding to the series is “Halo: Evolutions, Essential Tales of the Halo Universe” which features different stories from many writers that have worked on other game and sci fi novels. For example Tobias S. Buckell, B. K. Evenson and of course Karen Traviss who wrote Star Wars fiction. These stories are set across the halo universe giving you a new look on what went on beyond the Spartan program. One story that I favored the most is the story of Soren; a Spartan soldier that did not make it through the augmentation to go through the step of obtaining the Moljinir suit. Many only know of Master Chief who is a great hero to the franchise however many like me want to hear about the other Spartans or what happened to the ones that did not survive the training. Let us go even further and find out how did the “Covenant” even start in the first place?
These are the fillers that gamers like me who are interested in origin stories or side quest stories of existing or sub characters. In my opinion I say this book is a buy, it has a great involving story and I would say those that didn’t like the game might be more interested in their story since they display the characters in so much detail versus what you already see in game. I would like to thank Justin Golenbock and Tor Books for gifting me this literature of the Halo history. Halo: Evolutions is out now for purchase so give it a read and of course stay frosty gamers!
