Anatomy of a Garment: Tumi x Selectism

1. Laptop case: The front face of this collaboration fits a 15-inch laptop; unzip it from the main body for that business meeting. What’s more, you can detach the laptop bag and you’ll discover a hidden, external zipper on the duffel for newspapers and magazines.

2. Camera case: This unzips from the main bag, and comes with a shoulder strap.  “It’s for your map, camera, iPhone, small water bottle—maybe your bus pass,” says Sanz.

 3. Tote bag: Unzip this from the main cavity the same way you would the camera case—then unfurl it. “In the past,” Sanz says, “you had your business case, and you’d have to carry a messenger bag if you were going out in the afternoon.”

 4. Custom lining: Tumi’s usual black nylon lining gets chestnut and red stripes—a nice complement to the blue exterior’s brown leather accents. Carvalho says, “We didn’t want to scream, ‘Look at my fluorescent orange bag!’ We wanted something sophisticated. We wanted the surprise and delight of something unexpected.”
