Pax East 2012: Raven’s Cry

I have to admit  when we first booked an appointment for this game I was a bit skeptical about “Raven’s Cry”. All I knew was that it was a story about pirates. I was sitting there thinking to myself, they are gonna portray this guy to be a bad guy turn good to save the love of his life. Boy was I wrong. After listening to the crew from Topware pitch the game, all my thoughts of  how it was going to be was washed away. The Raven’s Cry is centered around Christopher Raven, whose parents were killed when he was a young boy. The game starts off with Christopher gaining a piece of information that he believes will lead him to his parents’ killer. Raven’s Cry implants players into a world full of treachery and adventure. You get to visit vast amount of islands with in the Caribbean, from Port Royal to an ancient Aztec city. An added bonus is that in the game you have to cart a course and set sail to these places. While more information for this has not yet been released, I look forward to hearing more about it and sharing once the details are released.

As for gameplay think of it as Red Dead Redemption meets Infamous meets Fable 2. You can play as bad guy or just be a bad ass, yup there is no good guy aspect to this game. Its pretty much setup to reinvent the image of pirates being nice guys and always being helpful.

Offering many innovative and engaging game elements, Raven’s Cry will immerse players in an epic story combined with fast paced action rich gameplay.

As for weapons you will have dated hardware. You can choose from a large number of weapons for different situations, like the Axe-Rifle or the Blunderbuss.  Each of these weapons play key parts in battle, like in duels or boss fights. There are tons of objects that you can use in battle that can help you fight enemies, like a rabid dog or setting things on fire. Another piece of your arsenal is FEAR, doing certain things helps build your fear meter. Fear can basically keep challengers at bay, however not all enemies have the same Fear tolerance.  Along with Fear you can use Frenzy, think of it like rampage mode or rage where your abilities are raised. Also as you make more of a reputation in a town the more wanted posters get posted on walls.

These collectible posters are not  just mechanical achievements: enemies and civilians alike are likely to recognize Raven  whenever there are posters nearby, so by  removing them the player makes it easier to go about unnoticed.

As for the environment, it plays a key role, the routes you take from point A to point B can lead you into different situations.  Using the environment is also key when playing Raven’s Cry, especially when the odds are against you.

All in all I can’t wait for this game to release later this year. It will be out for PC,  Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
