The Land of Pain – a new horror title that fuses intricate storytelling, survival mechanics and adventure-style puzzle-solving – has released via Steam and Humble today.

The game’s launch trailer showcases the game’s chilling atmosphere and gorgeous, CryEngine-powered visuals. The Land of Pain is a Lovecraftian horror adventure. After something strange appears in the woods, players will need to learn how to survive as they fend off a dark and disturbing evil. Flee from an unrelenting enemy, solve puzzles, and unravel the ancient mystery that’s befallen this land.

Principally the work of one developer, Alessandro Guzzo, The Land of Pain has already enjoyed plaudits following the release of a demo at the end of May, garnering significant attention on YouTube. Since then, Guzzo and his collaborators have been working to address feedback and improve the experience, as well as completing production of the full, several-hour-long singleplayer game.

The trailer sets the tone of the game, as what was intended as a quiet woodland getaway for the protagonist turns into something rather more disturbing. The Land of Pain features a huge world to explore, an array of head-scratching puzzles, and an ever-present enemy from whom you can only flee, rather than fight. Speaking of today’s release, Alessandro Guzzo said: “I can’t wait for everyone to explore the dark world I’ve been working on for the past few years.” He added: “It’s been a huge undertaking, but now everything is completed. I couldn’t have made it without everyone’s constant support, and I’m really proud of the final result.”

The Land of Pain is out now, priced at $11.99 / £8.99, discounted by 20% during launch week.
